SW Iowa Tornadic supercell – 6/28/17   Leave a comment

After an exciting night of a line of storms crossing Nebraska, I was about to head back home. I wasn’t sure if SE Nebraska could get heated up enough to produce supercell thunderstorms. After looking at the surface data, there was a strong surface low over Wisconsin and a cold front making it’s way SE. Dewpoints were in the 70’s + and there was an area of strong heating which would allow for convective initiation. I was able to be around Nebraska City and watch the first supercell develop into Iowa. The storm intensified rapidly and was rotating early on. It produced it’s first tornado by Shenandoah, IA. The tornado maintained for quite some distance eastward along state hwy 2. It never got very big but the storm rotation was constant and allowed for an exciting chase.
Here are some images of the first tornado:

The second tornado became obscured by rain but I was able to see it as the rfd winds blasted my car. This was the first tornadic storm in what was to be a tornado outbreak for IA and parts of MO.
